By default, every image on the Product page displays a white background. Depending on the image size and orientation (i.e. portrait or landscape), the page displays a different amount of background colour to fill the image area.

Note The system applies the same background colour to all Product page images. It's not possible to customise the image background colour on individual Product pages.

Adding colour

  • Go to the shop admin dashboard.

  • Click Settings > Images.

  • Go to the Image Background Colours card and click the image. A colour palette displays.

  • Pick a colour or enter a HEX code.

  • Optionally, click the plus (+) icon to save the colour.

  • Click the X to close the window.

  • Click Save.

Checking the results

Go to the online store and select a product card. The Product page displays. Inspect the colour background. Go back to the colour palette and change the colour if required.

Ideas to consider

A consistent background colour for images communicates a positive message. Product pages and lists look cleaner and more professional, which could invoke feelings of trust and higher perceived value. Consistency and clarity inspire confidence in your brand from the customer's point of view, which is never a bad thing.

On top of that, a busy photo or background means a more distracted customer who may not be focusing on the product like we want them to. This is why the vast majority of large e-commerce brands have product pages with white backgrounds. It's an industry standard for a reason - it works.

But, that doesn't mean every image on your shop front has to be boring. You can mix up the image background with a themed background, say for Christmas or Valentine's Day or Black Friday. Do, however, ensure that when the customer clicks on the image/product to see more that they can, in fact, see the image on a white background as well. Ideally, from multiple angles to fully showcase your products.

Of course, if your products are white, then you may need to mix it up. It's difficult (read: not impossible) to clearly showcase a white product with a white background, but you need the focus to be on the product. We also don't want to make the customer search for the item in the picture. We want the image to jump out at them and encourage them to click the Add to Basket button.

Here's our best advice. Start with what you think works for your images, and then test it. Change the background add images, and change the angles or the lighting. Leave each test for a significant enough period, usually 3-4 weeks (depending upon site traffic) and see record the conversion rates. Summarise at the end and replicate the winning combination.

That's it.
